This poem teaches a lesson about the issue at hand and also provides another perspective. Moreover, it describes a very sad story about discrimination. Also, I love the fact that it really draws the reader into a story that talks about her early life-it gives us a background of a child's perspective on Queens. It included very vivid, descriptive words. All of these were drawn off of her lifetime's experiences.Īll in all, my favorite poem of hers is Queens, out of the five I read, which were: Queens, Housekeeping Cages, Dusting, Ironing Their Clothes, and First Muse. Over the years, she wrote a third collection of poetry, a number of children books, and also fifteen separate stories. Her stories of the culture differences she experienced also transition into her essay book, Something to Declare, which was written in 1998. The Other Side, her second book, written in 1995, includes descriptive poems on her childhood and of the memories she has traced back to her immigration that influenced her life and who she became because of her lifestyle. Yet, her childhood stills plays a major role in her work. The themes of her poetry range from love, domestic life, and work. Her poetry has always incorporated simplicity and descriptive, clear language and wording. The very first book of poetry she wrote, Homecoming, was published in 1984, and later expanded in 1996. , 1996.Widely known, her poetry has been published in journals, magazines, and books. Her poetry collections include The Woman I Kept to Myself (2011), Homecoming: New and Collected Poems (1996), and The Other Side / El Otro Lado (1996). In the poem Queen, 1963 by Julia Alvarez display’s the American people’s behavior towards new and unknown variables placed into their world, not by their choice. Instead of stating that there was a sprinkler in her yard, she made it. This was an effective example of a simile because it adds more color to Alvarez’s creative work of art. I like to read something that will grab my interest, keep my attention, and maybe make me think a little bit, and I believe that the five poems that I have chosen do so. An example of a simile in the poem Queens was By year’s end, a sprinkler waving like flag on our mowed lawn (Lines 4-5, Queens). But, since I have to make the best out of this, I chose five poems that I thought were the best. Also, I don’t understand why a lot of her poems are about housekeeping and chores. I, personally, don’t really like her poetry, and she must have not even have written that many poems because I can barely find anything on her. Overall, I regret picking Julia Alvarez as my poet. The only reason I chose it was because it was short. On the other hand, I have no idea what the poem “Storm Windows” is about. I do kind of like the poem “Dusting” because the main character says she likes to write her name on the dusty cabinet every morning, and I remember I used to like to write my name in the dust when I was little, too. The main reason I chose to do these poems is because they were short, and they were one of the very few poems I could find written by Julia Alvarez. The last two poems I chose are called “Dusting” and “Storm Windows”. I like this poem it’s cute and funny, and in a way sarcastic. Alvarez also made use of literary devices such as cacophony, and figures of speech such as anaphora. ” We all know we’ve wondered this too, but we just always went along with it. Julia Alvarez poems Dusting, Ironing Their Clothes, and Sometimes the Words Are So Close have the ability to be closely compared in regards to theme and the use of syntax to create a vivid feeling, and image. One line in the poem says, “I can’t believe only one woman in that town had that size foot, could fit into that shoe. This poem kind of analyzes the story of Cinderella, and it asks questions that it knows we’ve all been thinking all of these years. Another poem that I’ve chosen, which is my href=”/papers/olds-poem-4417″ data-wpel-link=”internal”>personal favorite, is called “Against Cinderella”.
